Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register anywhere to sign up?
No - you don't have to register anywhere and it's perfectly fine to just show up! However, we will be posting a social platform/app soon which will allow us to sign up and check in to walks and events. Please check back after Thursday, June 8th at 6 PM for details.
Do I need to be on time for ruck walks?
That depends. Right now, many of our ruck walks are at one location or a looped trail in which case you can come and go anytime during the session. However, some rucks are on a mapped trail (for example, starting at Maplewood Park in Deerfield through Bannockburn and back to Deerfield) in which case we will leave promptly at the start time.
What should I wear or bring?
Just wear whatever you would wear to take a brisk walk or workout and study walking shoes are strongly recommended (they don't need to be specific to rucking which you might find if you do a search for rucking shoes (also called Ballistic Trainers). If you are just starting out, you will want to add just a little weight (starting with zero if you haven’t walked in a while) in a backpack.
Do I need a specific backpack?
Any kind of backpack works, especially if you are keeping the weight at a minimum while just starting out. Once you get to around 20 pounds you might find it useful to get a specialized backpack that will be more comfortable for carrying weight (and some really like a waistband to take pressure off the neck and shoulders). We are happy to work with you to accommodate your specific needs and have experts that can advise you.
How much weight should I carry?
The amount of weight you carry will depend on your fitness level and goals. As a general rule of thumb, start with 5-10% of your body weight and gradually increase the weight over time (generally not exceeding more than 1/3 of your weight). It's important to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard too fast. We can advise training plans to help you avoid injury and burnout.
Can I ruck with a pre-existing injury?
It's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise program, especially if you have a pre-existing injury. Depending on the injury, rucking may be a great low-impact way to stay active and build strength. However, it's important to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard, too fast.
Can I bring my dog, kid, husband, etc?
Yes! Rucking is a great way to walk your dog, and your kids (in a stroller or baby carrier which is the best way to add weight!) and get your partner and family members involved and moving with you! We are female-centric but everyone is welcome.
